Brno - The state prosecutor has charged the chairman of the Regional Court in Brno, Jaromír Pořízek, with misconduct during the construction of the Brno judicial complex. This was reported today by Czech Television (ČT). The police began investigating Pořízek two years ago due to allegedly uneconomical construction that cost nearly two billion crowns. Pořízek denies any wrongdoing. Due to the prosecution, he theoretically risks temporarily losing his position as a judge.
According to earlier information, Pořízek is being prosecuted for the abuse of public office, neglect of duties in the management of foreign property, and violation of mandatory rules of economic conduct. The case is being handled by the Regional Public Prosecutor's Office in Ostrava.
The judicial complex houses the Municipal Court of Brno and the District Court of Brno-Country in the main building, and in another facility, state prosecutors for Brno-City and Brno-Country. Initially, it was anticipated that the construction would cost 805 million, but after precise cost assessments, the price rose to 1.674 billion crowns, and ultimately, total costs climbed up to 1.938 billion. The construction has also been investigated in the past by the Financial Office, the Supreme Audit Office, and the Office for the Protection of Competition.
The head of the regional court denies any misconduct. In the past, he pointed out that the changes in project costs are misinterpreted. He claims that when the initial cost estimate was set, no one knew all the important facts. The original procurement process also did not account for the fact that prosecutors from Brno-Country would move into the new complex.
