Ostrava - The year-long renovation of the roof of the House of Art in Ostrava has been completed at nearly 18 million crowns. The roof was in an unsatisfactory technical condition before its replacement. Jana Malášek Šrubařová, spokesperson for the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, which operates the House of Art, told ČTK today. Overall, it was a reconstruction of four separate pent roofs and gable roofs covering an area of 1,107 square meters.
"The condition of the roofs before the renovation was unsatisfactory both aesthetically and technically. It was essential to replace the roofing membrane," she said. She added that the original galvanized roofing material was replaced with titanium zinc. It was also necessary to insulate the roofing membrane and replace the eaves gutters, while the original steel structures and wooden beams from 1926 were painted and cleaned. Surfaces made of artificial stone, exposed brickwork, and plaster were also repaired.
The House of Art was built nearly a hundred years ago as the first artistic exhibition space in Ostrava. Its architecture was based on the trends of that time, designed in the functionalist and constructivist style. "It is a significant cultural monument for our region, which we must take care of. Its high-quality and extensive collections rank the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava among the five most important galleries in the Czech Republic," said Lukáš Curylo (KDU-ČSL), Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for culture and heritage care.
The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava is a contribution organization of the Moravian-Silesian Region, and it is the largest collecting gallery in the region. The collections contain over 23,000 artworks. The exhibition spaces of the gallery are located in the House of Art, a nationally protected building from 1926, which ranks among the gems of Ostrava's architecture.
