Prague - The buildings of the year 2014 are the Central European Institute of Technology CEITEC in Brno, the cable car to Sněžka, the family house "LF" in the Prague suburb of Nebušice, the aviation museum of Metoděj Vlach in Mladá Boleslav, and the shopping center Šantovka in Olomouc. The results were announced today by ABF - Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, which organizes the competition. The jury, led by architect Radomíra Sedláková, selected this year from 58 registered Czech projects, with an additional five from abroad. 15 of them made it to the finals of this year's 22nd edition of the competition. For the first time this year, the jury also awarded the title of Foreign Building of the Year 2014. This title was awarded to the construction of the emergency admission department of the L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. Five buildings realized by Czech companies competed for the title. The jury members did not visit these buildings but evaluated them based on video presentations. The public awarded the prize to the Ostrava World of Technology in Vítkovice, which was also recognized by the Chairman of the Senate Milan Štěch with his prize. The General Partner Architectureweek Award was received by KCEV - Krkonošské Center of Environmental Education, which received the nickname "Mole". The Prague Mayor's Award was given to the reconstruction of the Mánes Gallery. Just like in previous years, this year's edition was open to all buildings without distinction regarding the type of construction or the amount of costs incurred for its acquisition. The condition for applying to the competition was the completion and commissioning or approval for use in the period from June 2013 to May of this year. The construction industry has been one of the sectors most affected by the recent economic crisis. Since 2008, builders have lost 443 billion crowns, which is the turnover for one year. According to an analysis of statistical data during that time, 41 larger companies went bankrupt, and up to 50,000 people lost their jobs in the sector. One of the consequences of the crisis is a significant drop in prices in public construction tenders.
