Zlín - The reconstruction and modernization of the auditorium of the Academia center of Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín received the highest award in the Building of the Year 2021 competition for the Zlín Region, namely the Grand Prix of architect Pavel Novák. The new design of the auditorium was created by architect and Zlín native Eva Jiřičná. The jury praised the absolutely precise execution of all work, said the chairwoman of the expert jury, Dagmar Nová, to journalists today.
The auditorium was completely reconstructed from the roof to the basement, having served for more than 25 years before that. According to Jiřičná, the roof structure no longer complied with regulations, and people sitting in the seats had trouble seeing and hearing. The technologies have also been updated, and the colors of the interior have changed; the basic color of the hall is gray, while the seats are orange, which is also the university's color.
"It is an absolutely precise and top-notch execution. It is an unprecedented quality of work. Projects by Professor Jiřičná are very demanding and impose high requirements on construction companies," said Nová.
The Grand Prix of architect Pavel Novák has also been awarded to other buildings designed by Jiřičná, including the Educational Complex of Zlín University, which was the best building of 2017 in the Zlín Region. Last year, the Grand Prix was awarded to the scientific reconstruction of the national cultural monument Libušín in Pustevny in the Beskydy Mountains. In the Building of the Year competition, it also received the Governor's Award of the Zlín Region. This year, the Governor's Award was given for the roof repair of the Lešná castle at the Zlín zoo.
In the 20th edition of this year's competition, 47 buildings entered in seven categories, compared to 43 last year. According to Nová, the quality of buildings continues to increase. "Almost every building could receive some award; judging becomes more demanding year after year," Nová stated. Some of the submitted buildings were historical objects, and the jury observed that there are companies in the region with skilled craftsmen capable of creating atypical works or respecting traditional methods.
The jury awarded prizes and honorable mentions in seven categories. In the civil engineering category, the main award went to the revitalization of the farmyard in Rymice in the Kroměříž area. In the residential buildings category, it was awarded to the Bartoška Residence in Zlín. Among single-family houses, the main award went to a house in Janová. The main award in the industrial and agricultural buildings category was won by the Flatbed hall in Jablůnka in the Vsetín area, while the southeast bypass of Otrokovice was successful among transportation, engineering, and ecological structures.
Among the submitted realizations of developmental projects by cities and municipalities, the city swimming pool in Bojkovice received an award. In the category of buildings that companies from the region have taken care of beyond the Zlín Region, the main award was given for modifications at the castle in Vranov nad Dyjí. The Syndicate of Journalists awarded a prize to the kindergarten in the area of the Zlín regional hospital. For the first time this year, the award from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic was awarded to the Development Innovation Center of modularity of the Vizovice company Koma Modular. Representatives of the buildings received their awards today at the castle in Holešov.
