České Budějovice - The South Bohemian Regional Office has not yet issued a zoning decision for the construction of the Brno railway station because the applicants for the zoning decision requested a suspension of the proceedings. The South Bohemian Regional Office has been dealing with the case for more than a year. Currently, it is gathering the final materials related to the impact of the construction on the environment. Viktor Tomšík, head of the building department of the South Bohemian Regional Office, said this to ČTK today. The South Bohemian Regional Office is addressing the construction of the Brno railway station due to bias.
"We have requested specific opinions from the Ministry of the Environment. Once we have them all together, we will inform the participants of the proceedings about the additions to the file, and subsequently, further decisions will be made," said Tomšík.
Brno representatives decided on Tuesday that they want a new train station in a shifted position. In the approved resolution, they demand that the state simultaneously begin the construction of a predominantly underground double-track railway connecting the north and south of the city via the new station. The resolution indicates that the city does not plan to build the New City Boulevard, which was outlined in the feasibility study. The final decision on the Brno station and the comprehensive modernization of the railway hub is expected to be made by the government in May.
The city leadership argues in its decision that the shifted station is ready for construction more than the variant in the center. However, the resolution mentions that a partial change to the zoning plan is also necessary for the shifted variant. If construction begins by 2023, the state should at least partially obtain European funds for the construction of the station. It will likely also be easier to integrate high-speed rail into the shifted station, which the state is currently only considering and preparing to commission studies for. The new station is expected to cost nearly 50 billion crowns.
The new station and the modernization of the hub are necessitated by the current state. Additional trains cannot be directed to the station, and it is at capacity limits, despite increasing demand for railway transport. Discussions about relocating the station have been ongoing in Brno for almost 100 years.
