Brno - Brno city councilors approved, despite strong opposition from civic initiatives and the opposition Green Party, the assignment of the urban plan for the years 2010-2020. For the key document, which will significantly affect the urban development of the city, 38 out of 55 councilors raised their hands in favor. The plan specifies what can be built in which parts of the city and allows, for example, the construction of the controversial R43 road towards Svitavy or the reconstruction of the railway junction including the relocation of the station. Representatives of civic initiatives and individual residents of the parts and municipalities affected by the planned construction of the R43 today tried to persuade councilors to consider an alternative route known as the Boskovice Furrow. The route passing through the Brno district of Bystrc will affect 30,000 people, while the other option will affect only 3,000 residents, they stated. They also argued with 34,000 signatures on a petition, which they have not yet submitted. The Green Party attempted once again to reopen the question of the discussed reconstruction of the Brno railway junction. The Greens wanted to push for the plan to also consider maintaining the station in its current position. "The urban plan we are currently discussing will be valid only from 2010, by that time work on the reconstruction of the station must have been underway for four years," emphasized Deputy Mayor Radomír Jonáš. Otherwise, the Czech Republic would lose the possibility of drawing subsidies from the EU. The reconstructed railway junction with a new station south of the current one is already accounted for in the recently amended valid urban plan. For several hours, it seemed that the only problem in Brno was the proposal to establish an artificial ski slope in Wilson's Forest. Civic associations and environmentalists have long protested against its construction. They repeatedly presented their views today and the exchange of opinions was not without booing from the participants. The mayor had to threaten police intervention. The coalition clubs ODS and KDU-ČSL eventually agreed to withdraw the proposal from the urban plan assignment. Significant attention was also paid by opponents of the proposed assignment to the effort to limit the space allocated for gardens. The city leadership justified the move by stating that the city has too many of them and they create an unsuitable barrier in the built-up area of the city. Many civic associations criticized the city hall for not informing the public enough about the urban plan and for dismissing the environmentalists' comments. The councilors rejected the criticism.
