Brno - The model of the new football stadium in Brno was presented by a model that was ceremoniously unveiled this afternoon in the former sports area behind Lužánky. The new arena will be built on the site of the current dilapidated stadium and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The construction costs are estimated at around 1.5 billion crowns. The stadium should have a capacity of 23,500 spectators, with the possibility of expansion to 33,000 seats.

"The construction of a new football stadium is one of the strategic projects of the city of Brno. By the end of 2017, we should have secured financing. In the following year, we plan to start construction. At this stage, the main problem is negotiating all the permits for construction," said Brno's mayor Petr Vokřál during the ceremonial unveiling of the model measuring 120x120 cm.

The complex will also include four training fields. In close proximity, Kometa Brno is planning to build an ice hockey hall. "It should not be a race to see which facility is built first. I expect that the football stadium and the ice hockey hall will be completed around the same time," Vokřál said.

"Never before has the construction of a new football stadium been at such an advanced stage of development," noted the chairman of the football club Zbrojovka Václav Bartoněk.

Funding for the new football stadium is expected to come from 600 to 700 million crowns from the city, 500 million from the Football Association of the Czech Republic and the government, and 300 to 400 million for infrastructure and parking should be covered by the European Union.

The main impetus for the construction of the new stadium was last year's farewell of striker Petr Švancara to his career, before which proactive fans restored the ruins of the dilapidated stadium to a usable condition. 35,000 spectators attended the event. "I must commend the work of the volunteers. We often bring foreign delegations to these places. They cannot believe what human enthusiasm can achieve," Vokřál stated.
