Brno - The preparation for the construction of a new football stadium in Brno at Lužánky has progressed to the environmental impact assessment phase. The document on the EIA portal indicates that construction is expected to begin next year, with completion planned for 2020. The new stadium, in the shape of an ellipse and clad in red bricks, will feature fully covered stands and capacity for 30,000 seated spectators.
The preparation for the stadium construction has been one of the priorities of the current Brno coalition; the old stadium, built after World War II, was abandoned by the Zbrojovka football team in 2001. Two years ago, a farewell match for Petr Švancara took place here, and various sporting events are held, but the stands are unusable. The ruin of the stadium will be completely demolished.
The new stadium is set to have one underground and eight above-ground floors, and will be 30 meters tall. There will be nearly 500 parking spaces under the stands. Additional hundreds of parking spaces are planned to be created near the swimming stadium. To simplify transportation, the Sportovní street is also planned to be expanded to four lanes.
In addition to the necessary facilities for football, the stadium will also include commercial facilities independent of the football calendar. It is planned to have a restaurant, accommodation, a sports equipment store, a grocery store, and a fitness center.
Plans also exist for the construction of a hockey stadium in the vicinity, although there are no specific timelines yet.
Practically since the beginning of the millennium, the Zbrojovka footballers have been playing at the stadium in Králově Poli, where the average attendance does not even reach 5,000 people per match. The construction of the new stadium is estimated to cost around two billion crowns.
