Čelákovice (near Prague) - In Čelákovice near Prague, they are preparing a revitalization of the square, which should restore its function as the center of the town. The repairs, costing around 42 million crowns, will begin this year and finish next year, confirmed the mayor Josef Pátek (ODS) to ČTK. The square, which was last renovated during the First Republic, will change entirely after reconstruction. According to the project, the main road will be relocated southward, and a pedestrian promenade will be created in the central part. "It will also include water features, a fountain, and a flowing canal with a water cascade, which symbolizes the Elbe River on which the town of Čelákovice lies,” said Pátek. The new square will also feature extensive furniture for relaxation and numerous park improvements. Čelákovice has had the project ready for several years, and last year the town managed to secure a grant from the EU. The total investment is 42 million crowns, and the grant will cover half of the costs. The revitalization is currently in the preparation phase; the town already has a building permit and is just waiting for the signature of the grant agreement from the Regional Operational Program of the Central Bohemia Region, confirmed the Čelákovice mayor. Čelákovice effectively does not have a square today, as a road runs through it. "It has lost its natural function as the center of the town, where citizens meet and important events take place," stated Pátek. The town is currently looking for solutions to minimize the impact on residents during the reconstruction. The mayor also confirmed that archaeologists expect to find archaeological discoveries during the construction work. Plans for square reconstruction are also underway in Příbram and Mělník. Repairs costing around ten million crowns are planned in Příbram this fall. The revitalization of Míru Square in Mělník will begin in spring and will cost 35 million crowns.
