Ostrava - The city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz is preparing to fill in the gaps in the city center, which has been gradually depopulating. It aims to offer residents more rental housing options and to bring residents back to the center of the regional capital, who should contribute to its revitalization. Currently, work is underway to develop three gaps, and the district wants to cooperate with the city in their construction, without whose financial assistance it would not be able to afford the projects. Jana Pondělíčková, spokesperson for the city hall, said this today to ČTK.

In cooperation with the city, the district is preparing an architectural competition for the construction of an apartment building in the gap between Kostelní and Biskupská streets. The area of the current parking lot, covering approximately 1,100 square meters, will be developed.

“The area is quite complicated due to the previously poorly conceived entrance to the collector, and as one of the conditions for the apartment construction we had to secure an adequate number of underground parking spaces. This has been achieved, and we have currently ordered an archaeological survey from the National Heritage Institute in Ostrava and requested the city and the main architect’s department to administer the architectural competition,”
said Deputy Mayor Dalibor Mouka (Ostravak). Besides apartments and underground parking, the building will include shops and an administrative section. The costs are estimated at 100 million crowns.

The district is also further along with the construction of the apartment building Residence Janáčkova opposite the former slaughterhouse, which is also being prepared for restoration and will serve as a backdrop for the city gallery after renovation.

“The six-story building with 26 apartments has been designed and is awaiting the issuance of land use approval. After the building permit is issued, which is expected in the second half of the year, we are ready to announce a public competition for the contractor,”
said Mouka. The six-story building will primarily feature two plus kitchenette apartments, as well as four three plus kitchenette apartments and one four plus kitchenette apartment. There will also be 33 parking spaces created, including ten indoor ones. The costs are estimated at 50 million crowns.

An architectural study has also been commissioned, which addresses the construction on the site of the current parking lot next to the Old Town Hall adjacent to the central Masaryk Square. The New Lauby project includes not only an underground parking lot but also a commercial section and primarily the construction of apartments.

City councilor Lukáš Semerák (Ostravak) said that an archaeological survey could begin in the area as early as summer. It is possible that Gothic cellars are located there. “The idea is that if Gothic cellars are found, we could incorporate long glass panels into parts of the sidewalks, which we would illuminate,” said Semerák. According to him, this would contribute not only to brightening up Velká Street, which is relatively narrow, but it could also become another attraction.
