Jablonec nad Nisou - In Jablonec nad Nisou, work on the reconstruction of the northern facade of the town hall continues after the winter break. The last stage of the repair of the historic building's shell is to be completed by the end of the summer holidays. Until then, it is not possible to use the parking spaces in front of the Radnice cinema on the northern side of the building, said today the spokeswoman of the city hall, Jana Hajná, to ČTK. The city has already invested 21 million crowns in the restoration of the facade. Completing it to the appearance it had in the 1930s will cost an additional four million.
The city has been working on the repairs of the town hall facade since 2016. The tower has also been reconstructed and received a new lightning rod. "Last year's exceptionally beautiful weather allowed us to start the reconstruction of the northern side of the facade earlier. Over the winter, the core of the plaster matured, and now the workers will apply the final colored břízolit plaster on it," described the progress of the work Petr Mikulášek from the investment construction department of the Jablonec city hall. According to him, the maturation of the core over the winter helps with the quality of the future facade. "If it's not allowed to mature properly, white lime efflorescence forms, which then spoils the whole impression. So, it’s better not to rush," he added.
The Jablonec town hall is an important building of Czechoslovak interwar architecture. It was built between 1931 and 1933 according to the design of architect Karel Winter. The city has been gradually restoring the listed building since 2011. The windows and also the interiors have been repaired. The vestibule now has new lanterns, which were previously missing because there wasn't enough money for their production during the construction of the building. They were manufactured according to the original plans by the specialized company Houska&Douda. The two lounges have also been returned to their original appearance, and last year the council chamber underwent an expensive reconstruction.
