Cheb - The former university dormitories in Cheb, known as the blue tower, should provide not only apartments but also accommodation for guests of the city and its organizations. The reconstruction of the building is expected to cost around ten million crowns, which the city will finance from its own resources, Cheb mayor Antonín Jalovec (VPM) told reporters today.

"Initially, we announced that we wanted to create apartments in the blue tower, around 50 apartments. In the end, we managed to find a compromise where, by reducing the size of some apartments, 48 residential units will be created from the fifth floor upward. They will mainly be 1+1 units and studio apartments, which are in the highest demand. But we also accommodated the requests of sports clubs and cultural entities," Jalovec stated.

In the first three floors, a hostel should be established, but not for employees of companies or social cases, but exclusively for guests of the city or sports clubs. The accommodation will be managed by the Cultural Center Svoboda.

While the hostel will only need new furniture and should be available by spring next year, the conversion of the floors into apartments will take longer. Nevertheless, according to Jalovec, this should also be completed by the end of next year.

By reducing the number of apartments, the city will also meet the requirements for the necessary number of parking spaces, which are scarce in the area.

The former dormitory was purchased by the city from the University of West Bohemia. The building was originally intended to serve as temporary accommodation for clients from the reconstructed elderly home Skalka. However, the building did not meet fire safety regulations for such accommodation. The city's leadership rejected the idea of a hostel for employees in the industrial park. Ultimately, the option of converting it into small apartments won.
