Františkovy Lázně - The construction of a new visitor center will begin in the national natural reserve Soos near Františkovy Lázně. The modern facilities will replace a 50-year-old wooden hut, which serves as a ticket office and is currently practically the only refuge for the staff of the complex. This was stated today by the manager of the reserve, Petr Adamec, to journalists. The construction will cost about 15 million crowns, and the city of Františkovy Lázně has obtained a grant for it from a cross-border program.

"It will include entrance areas, research rooms, and facilities for employees. Additionally, a gazebo will be built here, which will function as a natural classroom, along with new sanitary facilities. The construction itself should start within 14 days. We expect it to open next season - probably not at the beginning of the season, but sometime during it," Adamec said.

The investment is significant for Františkovy Lázně, whose museum manages the reserve. For the city, Soos, with an attendance of up to 60,000 people a year, is one of the main tourist attractions. "The construction of the new visitor center is also important from an educational perspective. Primarily, we want to lead young people to knowledge and protection of nature," said the mayor of Františkovy Lázně, Jan Kuchař (PRO), to ČTK. The city also signed a cooperation agreement today with the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic, which will participate in educational events in the reserve.

The construction should not affect the operation of Soos for visitors. The national natural reserve, covering an area of 221 hectares, is accessible via a 1.2-kilometer-long educational trail along open pathways that leads across the bottom of a dried saline lake. The reserve is today primarily known for the so-called mofettes, bubbling mud volcanoes. They are created by escaping carbon dioxide, which is a remnant of past volcanic activity.
