Sázava - Approximately a thousand people participated in today’s consecration of the chapel in Sázava in the Žďár region, built by the parishioners from donations and their own labor. The service in the new chapel was led today by Bishop Jan Vokál of Hradec Králové. The chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The construction of the building, organized by the Karem Sázava association, took over two years and was completed in August. František Ledvinka stated this on behalf of the association.
The chapel resembles a biblical ark, with a 15-meter tall metal cross as its dominant feature. "We founded the association in 2015, and in the spring of 2016, the foundation slab began to be built," said Ledvinka, who is also the mayor of Sázava. The new chapel stands on an elevated plot of land in the outskirts of the village with 660 inhabitants. The structure, which has a wooden frame, reaches a height of ten meters at its highest point.
The total amount spent on the construction exceeded three million crowns, but according to Ledvinka, the value of the work is significantly higher. Volunteers selflessly contributed over 5000 hours of labor, and the association also received a lot of timber. All received financial donations and payments can be traced on a transparent account, accessible on the association's website.
Since 1785, there has been a church in Sázava serving the Czech Brethren Evangelical Church. Catholics belong to the Roman Catholic parish in Velká Losenice, which is four kilometers away. According to statisticians, during the 2011 census, over 29 percent of the population in the Vysočina region declared faith, the second highest percentage in the Czech Republic after the Zlín Region. Since the 1990s, several chapels have been established in the Vysočina region through local initiatives, for example in Věžnice and Brzkovie. A new pilgrimage site with a chapel was created in Slavkovice.
