Telč – In Telč, builders are set to complete the renovation of the town hall for approximately 30 million crowns by January. The office should be operational in the reconstructed historical building on Zachariáš z Hradce Square from May next year; until then, the information center is also expected to return there, said the head of the city development department, Vladimír Švec, to reporters today.
Officials are temporarily working in various locations. “Gradually, as we manage to equip the spaces, we expect that the departments will move back to the town hall,” Švec stated. He added that the renovation of the town hall is the second phase of a large project funded by the European IROP program, which involved two historical buildings in the square. The city completed repairs on the children and youth house opposite the town hall last year.
The historical core of Telč is among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The oldest written mention of the house, which is now the children and youth house (DDM), dates back to 1541 and concerns the death of the property owner. This was stated by the director of DDM, Luboš Janovský.
The reconstruction of this house with the descriptive number 66 cost 35 million crowns, including furnishings, and was conducted under the supervision of heritage conservationists. Due to the damage to some elements, repairs were necessary. “When we uncovered the ceiling structures, we found that the floors and other structures were even more damaged than we perhaps anticipated,” Švec noted.
In addition to preserving the house, new spaces were opened thanks to the investment. The underground city has been connected to the previously opened part of the Telč underground labyrinth, with an accessible path now measuring about 250 meters. Besides restoring the first and second floors of the children’s house, the city has created a new usable space in the attic, where there used to be only a storage area.
Before the coronavirus epidemic, around 1,000 children attended activities at DDM in Telč and the surrounding areas. According to the director, the number of participants in the current school year could reach 800. DDM organizes various activities, including sports, craft, and language classes. There are around 60 interest groups currently open.
