Vsetín - The renovated Svobody Square in Vsetín will open to the public on Thursday. Its appearance was influenced by local residents during public discussions. The gravel surface, which people criticized the most, has been replaced by paving and grass. The furnishings are also richer compared to the original state, reported Jana Čadová, spokesperson for the town hall. The square was reconstructed two years ago. Architect Igor Kovačevič designed it as a memorial site associated with the liberators' monument, according to the city's then-guidelines. "The chosen gravel surface, however, was not functional; it was muddy in the rain and dusty in dry weather. For this reason, residents were not shy about criticizing the city," said Čadová. Several protest events also took place in the city center. The new town hall leadership was not satisfied with the final appearance either. "That is why we organized a series of public discussions, which resulted in a new joint proposal to create a relaxation zone connected to the park. Architect Kovačevič then elaborated on it," said Mayor Iveta Táborská (ODS). Construction work began in the summer. A relaxation zone and a play area for children have been added to the square. The renovation cost 3.2 million crowns. The opening of the renovated square will be complemented on Thursday afternoon by a concert by the band Dareband. People will also be able to taste fair-trade coffee and talk with city representatives. "Three other major investment projects will also be presented here, namely the revitalization of Kolonka, the reconstruction of the park near the railway line between the Rybníky and Trávníky housing estates, and the already initiated reconstruction of the swimming pool near the industrial school into a sports and recreational area," Čadová added.
