Vsetín - The Vsetín City Hall wants to change the appearance of Freedom Square. The area was reconstructed last year, but some people do not like certain modifications, especially protesting against the natural gravel surface of the square. The city is therefore negotiating with architects about changing the surface and other repairs of the square, spokesperson for the city hall Jana Čadová informed CTK today. According to the city administration, gravel was used because it was significantly cheaper compared to other construction materials or a grassy surface. The design was approved back in 2008, and the current city leadership had no opportunity to intervene in the project. "We all agree that the square is not as we expected," said Mayor Iveta Táborská. Architect Igor Kovačevič will prepare variants for the gravel surface in agreement with the city hall, which are expected to invigorate the square. "It includes grass cover, diagonal sidewalks, and additional furniture," said the mayor. The city will then present the proposals to the public, who will be able to express their opinions on them. The city repaired the square for about 30 million crowns, of which 85 percent was made up of European grants. The city administration renounced the grant for the already completed second phase of reconstruction, but according to Čadová, it will not lose the money, as it will use it for other projects. It will likely request a grant again for the new modifications. The square received a new surface during reconstruction, the adjacent pedestrian zone and parking lot were also repaired, as well as the sewerage and water main. New public lighting was created, and furniture and trees were added.
