Vsetín - The residents of Vsetín selected one of two options for the redesign of Freedom Square in an online poll, against which the people of Vsetín protested last year. The citizens are particularly dissatisfied with the gravel surface of the square, which is also not favored by the city hall’s management. The previous city leadership used gravel primarily for cost-saving reasons during previous renovations. Now, the surface will be paved, and the square will be supplemented with the missing greenery. Jana Čadová, the spokesperson for the city hall, said this today. Mentionedly, the city has discussed the future appearance of the square multiple times with the people. At the January meeting of the city council, architect Igor Kovačevič presented two proposals that included partial grassing of the square supplemented with paved areas for pedestrians. The council members commented on the proposals, and the revised versions were placed on the city’s website for people to choose from and provide feedback on the future appearance of the square. "The vast majority of discussion participants leaned towards option number 1," Čadová stated. Both options have the same basis, which includes a reinforced inner area surrounded by a strip of greenery under the linden trees. The only difference is the shape of the green areas. The grassy area will not be seeded; instead, a grass carpet will be laid. In the winning option, there will be interruptions at the points of the sidewalks that allow diagonal passage across the square. The city hall is requesting the study to incorporate some minor changes, such as the removal of the pavement within the grassy areas and the addition of trash bins and benches along the outer perimeter of the square. According to Čadová, the costs for the modifications were estimated at 4.5 million without VAT for the winning option, while the second version was six million crowns. "The area modification is a compromise between technical possibilities and their cost. We intend to implement the selected version still this year," stated the mayor, Iveta Táborská (ODS). The architect is currently working on the project documentation, followed by a tender for the contractor. The city hall expects to complete the work in October. In addition to its own funds, which it plans to use for the furniture, the city is looking for options to fund the remaining part of the modifications with grants from European funds.
