Viktor Rudiš

Brno - The eighty-three-year-old architect Viktor Rudiš today received a prestigious industry award in Brno. The Czech Chamber of Architects honored him for the year 2010. One of the most respected living architects in the Czech Republic gained fame, for instance, as one of the designers of the Brno housing estate Lesná and the author of the Czechoslovak pavilion at the Expo exhibition in Osaka in 1970.
"Viktor Rudiš is, of course, the author of other significant projects and realizations that should be mentioned. However, the jury believes that the two works presented above are sufficient, as they best illustrate the author's oeuvre," explained its decision by the expert jury of the Czech Chamber of Architects.
The Lesná housing estate was built from 1962 to 1966 as a well-thought-out urban complex. According to Rudiš, the architects wanted to design a group of buildings "unique as a whole, but also in individual details." In their vision of a "garden city," they were inspired by a residential district in the city of Espoo in Finland. The Lesná housing estate still has resident patriots who recognize the architectural value of the quarter. Recently, they urged the Brno city hall to prevent further construction in Lesná.
The Czech Chamber of Architects also appreciated Rudiš for not being one of the artists compliant with the previous regime. "The decisive fact for awarding the Honor to this creator is, however, his lifelong work, which is practically free from any qualitative fluctuations. Viktor Rudiš is one of the few who managed to maintain a remarkable standard," reads the justification.
Rudiš was born in 1927 in Brno. He studied architecture at the local technical university. He spent most of his career at the Stavoprojekt Brno studio. He also engaged in teaching and publishing activities. After 1990, he established a joint studio with his son Martin. Together they worked, for example, on the reconstruction and completion of Pavilion G at the Brno exhibition center, residential buildings in Litomyšl, and the renovation of the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno.
