Vizovice - The garden at the Vizovice Castle is set to undergo a complete restoration. Some original elements should also return, said the castle curator Jana Pluhařová to ČTK. The garden, designed in English and French styles, was created during the completion of the castle in the 1770s.

The garden is a frequent destination for visitors to Vizovice. "At first glance, it is beautiful, but as the trees age, the original concept of the garden has been lost. We have commissioned a historical architectural survey, and the study for the restoration of the castle garden is currently being completed. We plan to follow this with individual projects and gradual restoration," the curator stated, noting that it is difficult to secure funding for a restoration that would be done all at once. The costs have not yet been quantified.

According to Pluhařová, the restoration of the garden will be based on the original intention, although there are not enough historical materials. "We are discussing which elements we would like to return to the garden, such as pavilions. We know that there were two. We know that there were Roman baths, but we do not know what they looked like. It is necessary to decide which moment of its appearance we will be returning to," Pluhařová said.

Even now, the replacement planting is being selected from species that were historically present in the garden. "However, we are trying to find more resilient species. Interestingly, we have already returned poplars that were cut down in the 1930s. They formed the imaginary axis of the classicist complex," the curator noted.

The restoration of the screen wall between the main path and the garden, which is now sparse, will probably come first. "It is a challenge to find a growth that is not too tall, so it doesn't endanger cars, but creates a sound barrier. We will address this first, no later than next year," Pluhařová stated.

The castle garden originally covered an area of 11 hectares but later shrank by half. The castle is a national cultural monument, managed by the National Heritage Institute. The structure was built in the mid-18th century by Olomouc canon and later Hradec Králové bishop Heřman Hannibal z Blümegenu. He commissioned the prominent Brno architect František Antonín Grimm, who designed the castle in the then-modern French style. In the early 19th century, the estate transferred through a relative line to the Stillfried family, who owned it until 1945. After World War II, the management of the castle was taken over by the state, and it has been open to the public since 1948.
