Olomouc - The Jewish community will renovate the long-existing parking lot at Palach Square in the historic center of Olomouc, which belongs to it and is in a poor technical condition. Due to the reconstruction, the parking lot will be closed from February 27 to the end of April, said the chairman of the Jewish community of Olomouc, Petr Papoušek, to ČTK today.

In addition to new granite paving, modern lighting, and a surveillance camera system, according to Papoušek, an automatic self-service parking system will be implemented at the parking lot. Drivers will be able to pay with a contactless payment card upon exit.

"The current technical and aesthetically unsatisfactory state of the parking lot led the Jewish community of Olomouc to decide to modernize the parking lot so that it fits its unique location in close proximity to the city center and next to the municipal gardens,"
stated Papoušek.

The city hall plans to eventually renovate Palach Square, where the baroque Terezská Gate stands at its edge. The city council approved an architectural study for the square last year, which is now in poor condition. The study includes plans for a water feature that is meant to resemble a moat, as well as a wooden pier representing a drawbridge.

The dominant feature of Palach Square was the synagogue from 1897 to 1939, which was set on fire by local fascists after the occupation of Czechoslovakia. In 1955, a monument to Lenin and Stalin was installed at its site, which was removed in January 1990.
