Zlín - Construction work on the modifications of the center of Zlín, namely the so-called Gahurova Prospect, the underpass at Náměstí Práce, and Komenský Park, is expected to begin at the start of next year. This was announced to reporters today by Deputy Mayor Eva Štauderová (M.O.R.). Zlín has announced architectural competitions for the individual parts. A total of 60 proposals were submitted. By mid-2013, the city hall may draw up to 120 million CZK from European funds for these investments. "Architects showed the greatest interest in the revitalization of Gahurova Prospect, submitting 24 proposals. One less was submitted for the underpass, and 13 proposals concern Komenský Park," Štauderová elaborated. Three expert committees composed of architects, city representatives, and technical experts will meet on May 25, 26, and 27. Štauderová pointed out that it is an anonymous competition. The jury will only learn who prepared the winning proposal at the moment they select that proposal, she added. The public will also be able to familiarize themselves with all submitted proposals. The city hall will display them by autumn at the latest. The city hall has not yet selected a location. By announcing three architectural competitions for this space in Zlín, the new leadership, which emerged from the autumn elections, canceled the plan of the previous council members. They had approved that the architectural study would be prepared by the company AI-DESIGN of architect Eva Jiřičná. They justified this at the time by stating that the entire space connects to the newly constructed University and Congress Center. Both buildings and the area between them come from Jiřičná's workshop. Before the autumn elections, the city hall coalition consisted of ODS, ČSSD, and KDU-ČSL. Today, both Civic and Social Democrats are in opposition along with KSČM. The new coalition consists of TOP 09, STAN, M.O.R. - for the Moral Cleansing of the City Hall, Zlín Independent Movement, VV, and the Christian Democrats. "I believe that the architectural proposals will yield something that we would never even think of," added the Deputy Mayor. The opposition has not significantly criticized the new leadership's proposal so far. For example, councilor Ondřej Andrys (ODS) previously told ČTK that it is important for the individual parts to be architecturally connected. "We will only see that in the result, which we are of course curious about. I just hope that these steps do not slow down the entire process of transforming this space," he added.
