Architecture Today: Work in the Regions - ORA + XTOPIX

In the final part of the lecture and discussion series focused on contemporary architecture in local regions, architects Jan Veisser from the studio Original Regional Architecture (ORA) and Barbora and Pavel Buryškoví, founders of the XTOPIX studio, will speak. The last episode of the series will take place on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 6 PM at the cultural zone DEPO2015 in Plzeň.

Although the office ORA has a dual headquarters in Znojmo and Kutná Hora, it currently operates on a nationwide scale. The Prague studio XTOPIX mainly focuses its projects on the territory of the capital city and its surroundings, while maintaining a connection to Western Bohemia – it is involved in the long-term architectural transformation of the town of Planá, the birthplace of Barbora Buryšková. Among other things, it features the award-winning design of Kinonekino, a new cultural space in Planá.

The entrance fee for the event is 60 CZK. Tickets will be available on-site and in the presale.

The studio Original Regional Architecture (ORA) was founded in 2014 by architects Jan Veisser and Jan and Barbora Hora. As a result, the office is split between two locations – while Jan Veisser is associated with Kutná Hora, the Hory work in Znojmo. All three founding members of the studio have gathered study or work experiences abroad – in the Netherlands, Norway, or Turkey. Although in recent years, largely thanks to competitions, they have focused on larger-scale projects, the key theme of their work, for which they have already received several awards, has long been small towns and their context. This is also reflected in their further activities – for example, Jan Hora contributed as one of the authors to the publication Znojmo 1918–2020 and also designed the spatial solution for the exhibition of the same name.

The Prague studio XTOPIX was founded in 2011 by Pavel and Barbora Buryškoví. The studio focuses on projects of various scales, from the reconstruction of buildings or brownfields for cultural purposes, new school and kindergarten constructions to urbanism and the revitalization of squares and public spaces. It emphasizes projects with a social impact; it also strives to connect prominent artistic personalities, architects, and various institutions. Its project for the cultural space Kinonekino in Planá was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award for 2019. The same project received the Ministry for Regional Development Award as part of the Czech Architecture Award 2018 and was also named Building of the Year 2018 in the Plzeň Region. The office XTOPIX has also succeeded in several competitions, primarily for designs of educational buildings.
