For this spring, the Pěstuj prostor association has prepared a three-part series of lectures and subsequent discussions with representatives of studios operating in Czech regions. While one of the duo will always represent a studio active (also) in the Plzeň Region, the other will present the activities of their studio in another local region. The introductory part of the series Architecture Today: Work in the Regions will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 6 PM in the cultural space DEPO2015 in Pilsen.
What character does contemporary architecture in the regions have? What does practicing the profession outside the traditional centers of the domestic scene involve? How challenging is it to create quality realizations here? And how do the regional roots of creators influence the work of Prague studios? Architects Lukáš Blažek from Ječmen studio and Vojtěch Kaas and Jan Kalivoda from the office Progres architekti will seek answers to these and other questions while presenting their activities – in a symbolic dialogue of two approaches.
Ječmen studio is firmly connected to Olomouc, where Lukáš Blažek was born. The efforts of him and his wife Eva, co-founder of the studio, to operate in public space led both architects to establish a pop-up café in their garage – at the same address where their studio is located. Progres architekti cultivate their relationship with the places around Staňkov, the birthplace of Vojtěch Kaas, from Prague. However, nearly half of their realizations can now be found in West Bohemia.
Admission to the event is 60 CZK. Tickets will be available on-site and in advance.
The next part of the series Architecture Today: Work in the Regions, organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the city of Pilsen, and the Czech Architecture Foundation, will take place on Wednesday, April 10, at 6 PM. It will feature Jitka Ressová from the Zlín studio ellement architects and Eva Šarochová with Václav Matějka from the studio Projektor architekti.
Ječmen studio was founded in 2007 in Olomouc out of the conviction that it is possible to create good architecture even outside the main Czech centers. Since 2007, the studio has been led by its founders Lukáš and Eva Blažkovi. Together with a team of young architects and specialists, they work on a wide range of tasks from landscape and spatial studies to urban blocks and industrial areas, public spaces of cities and municipalities, buildings for recreation and housing, to interior design and exhibition design. They received the YAA 2010 Building Forum Award "Pilot in Architecture" for the landscape study of the Hynčice area under Sušina. For the design of the Kraličák guesthouse in the same village, they together with former colleague Vítězslav Petr won the Grand Prix of the Association of Architects in the New Building category in 2014.
The founders of the Prague studio Progres architekti, Vojtěch Kaas and Jan Kalivoda, have been active in the profession since 2006. They focus on architecture, smaller-scale urbanism, individual buildings, landscape architecture, industrial design, and exhibition design. They are interested in non-standard tasks and work on public buildings and spaces. They place exceptional importance in their work on thinking about sustainability and responsibility for the entry into the environment. In the last two years, they have received awards for competition designs for sports halls in Žatec and Nový Jičín. They received several international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award, for the project of minimal workplaces Microoffice.
