Culture and sport will be connected by gymnasts at their festival Sokolské Culturae in mid-June. Gymnastic exercises accompanied by a symphonic orchestra, a picnic with Olympians, and other unconventional programs will be hosted at the Brno Stadium.
The first year of the Sokolské Culturae festival will offer its audience a plethora of diverse performances, merging cultural and sporting elements. “Our motivation is to encourage the actors of both activities to engage in dialogue and bring both worlds closer together. We want to show that sport and culture unite society and do not stand at opposite poles, as may seem to be the case recently,” explained Michal Doležel, the deputy mayor of Sokol Brno I, who is organizing the entire event.
The upcoming festival aims to build on the historical tradition and contribute to mutual understanding between the worlds of art and sport, as both are an important part of human culture. Since its inception, the Sokol organization has sought to intervene from primarily sports or gymnastic activities into a broader spectrum of social events, including culture.
Over eight days, the Stadium on Kounicova Street will host soprano Soňa Červená, soloists from the Janáček Opera, artistic groups Ztohoven and Rafani, the Brno musical group Poletíme?, cimbalom music group Pajtáš, Brno DJs, Olympians from London 2012, and many others.
None of the performances will be traditional - for example, a pianist will perform Janáček's piece Music for Spinning Tops, to which Brno gymnasts will perform, another day theater groups from Husy na provázku and HaDivadlo will play a friendly football match followed by a picnic with musical production, and on another occasion, dancers accompanied by a symphonic orchestra will perform in the gym. All this will take place both in social halls and in gyms among the equipment or on the field. The entire festival will conclude with the popular Pecha Kucha Night organized in cooperation with the House of Art.
The festival organizers also aim to bring the meaning of the Sokol organization and the Stadion building itself closer, which was perceived as a center of versatility, encompassing both cultural and sporting life during the First Republic.
