Atelier Fanelsa
An international team of architects based in Berlin and Gerswalde (Brandenburg). A specific feature of Atelier FANELSA is the exploration of contemporary forms of work, life, and coexistence, especially in rural areas, peripheries, and in the city.
They simultaneously realize private projects, public buildings, exhibitions, and workshops. Within these formats, their main goal is to develop innovative and qualitative responses to questions concerning the conditions of contemporary society.
Atelier Fanelsa was founded by Niklas Fanelsa (1985) in 2016; he studied architecture at RWTH Aachen University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. After his studies, he worked at the renowned studio De Vylder Vinck Taillieu in Ghent and at Thomas Baecker Bettina Kraus Architekten in Berlin.
Niklas was also a teaching and research collaborator at RWTH Aachen University, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, and chair of design and housing at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In 2019/20, he was an emerging curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal and is currently opening the Village Commons exhibition as part of Trouble in Paradise at the Polish Pavilion, La Biennale di Venezia 21.

Malý Chmel
A young progressive studio officially founded in 2016 during the works on their first built project – an extension of a school in Nezamyslice by three founding partners; Miroslav Malý (* 1987), Míra Chmel (*1992), and Zdenek Chmel (*1986). Their collaboration began earlier, even during their studies. They were based in two cities in the Czech Republic – České Budějovice and Olomouc, but over time the studio expanded to Prague and Brno.
“If you want to do something good, something authentic, it takes time and effort. We have been collaborating since 2009, but we officially founded the studio in 2016. It was almost a rule for us that when we wanted to produce a truly quality project, we lost a lot in terms of money and time.”
Through their work, they have achieved numerous successful placements in architectural competitions, receiving the Rudolf Eitelberger Award 2019 for the extension of the primary school in Nezamyslice, and currently resonate as fresh winners of the prestigious competition for the reconstruction of the Center for Contemporary Art and Architecture (2021) and also as winners of the Residential Building 4 Dvory competition in České Budějovice (2021).
