39. Pre-conference series of Art yesterday and today on the topic Workshops of UMPRUM. History, present and life in them will feature a lecture dedicated to the lithography workshop with its masters Jana Hubatková and Jiří Vohradský.
Invitation to the lecture by workshop masters Jana Hubatková and Jiří Vohradský:
Let us enter the lithography workshop, which is located closest to the birthplace of the inventor of "lithography" Alois Senefelder. Just as the first workshops spread two hundred years ago through Bavaria, France, to the other countries of Europe and eventually the whole world, today our workshop welcomes students not only from Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia but also visitors from around the world, from Japan through Taiwan, Europe, to both South and North America. Maintaining its concept of a traditional graphic workshop and preference for direct manual printing from stone, it preserves something of the genius loci of the workshops of old masters of printing, while also being nourished by modern history, built by many great artists and creators in other fields who taught or studied at UMPRUM. In the post-war period, for example, Tichý, Filla, Bauch, Kaplický, Svolinský, Muzika, Sklenář, Balcar, and others... This uniqueness arises from the fact that ideas, processes, and realizations of creators from such a broad spectrum of fields, from drawers, illustrators, sculptors, ceramicists, glassmakers, textile artists to architects and theorists, meet here. All these influences and force curves meet, mix, and generate new energies in the alchemical crucible of the vaulted underground of the UMPRUM building, or newly temporarily in the vicinity of the deserted New Town courtyard, just a few steps from the former house of a master of another discipline, yet also connected with stone, Matyáš Braun. The workshop still draws from the impulses and influence of Mikoláš Axmann, who defined its setup and still affects with his work and approach not only graphic creation. The preservation of the continuity of this inspiring place or its future will be possible to discuss at a meeting with current teachers in it, MgA. Jana Hubatková and Jiří Vohradský, ak.mal.
Subsequent lectures will be: Glass grinding Antonín Votruba, Barbora Štefánková, and Alena Hájková December 1, 2025
Plastering Miroslav Spousta and Jan Němeček December 8, 2025
Lectures are held always at 18:00. UMPRUM, nám. Jana Palacha 80, Prague 1, 1st floor, auditorium 115
