Bright and airy interior with the exterior at your fingertips. Such a benefit is offered by family houses with large-format windows and glazed sliding systems. What was once just a dream for many of us can now be realized without difficulty. This trend has been given the green light for many years by exquisite projects from architects and the manufacturers of window and door profiles themselves. One such company is Schüco International KG, which specializes primarily in aluminum systems, a material ideal for the construction of several winged sliding and folding systems. Its excellent strength and machinability guarantee the creation of precisely fitting narrow structural elements with high tightness and optimal sound insulation. Not to mention the wide range of design and color options. You can choose from uninsulated interior systems to highly thermally insulated and security sliding systems, with the possibility of partial or comprehensive automation.
In addition to space-saving design with narrow sightlines, Schüco aluminum sliding and folding systems are characterized by easy operation. The profiles move almost silently along stainless steel guide rails. Opening and closing occurs in one plane, without disruptive protrusion of wings into the space. You can choose from sliding systems, lift-slide systems, folding or parallel sliding and tilting systems (the so-called PASK system). Sliding elements are suitable not only for a safe and user-friendly divide between the interior and exterior but also as a transparent and flexible space divider within the interior. An example might be an effective separation between the living area and the space with an indoor pool.
Lift-slide sliding doors ensure easy handling, opening to one side or from the center. In the closed position, they provide excellent thermal and sound tightness. Naturally, there is the option of equipping them with security features. The system is ideal for glazed façade constructions as well as for winter gardens. Another type, the popular PASK system, refers to parallel sliding and folding doors. The wings are installed in the frames so that they align perfectly from the outside and seal completely thanks to an internal overlap. With the PASK system, the wing of the sliding door can be tilted for ventilation or opened entirely. The advantage of Schüco folding doors is the option to almost completely open the glazed area. Individual elements fold to the side into a narrow bundle, and depending on the type of use, there are two variants available: Exterior folding doors with thermally insulated profiles or uninsulated interior folding doors.
Manual, motorized, and automatic control
There are no limits when choosing colors; the surfaces of the frames can be a different color on the inside and outside. Everyone can choose a shade that perfectly matches the given interior or exterior. Given the large formats of the sliding systems, with a weight of several hundred kilograms, consideration was also given to easy and quick operation. With the push of a button, doors can be opened and closed via e-slide technology. This allows fully automatic and quiet operation of wings weighing up to 250 kg (or sizes up to 3x3 m). The hidden automation is controlled via a keypad on the wing, through a spatial sensor, or centrally as part of the building's automated control system. It will be particularly appreciated by elderly people, disabled individuals, and children, as shifting the doors will not pose the slightest problem. For access from the outside, a fingerprint scanner can be installed. The sliding doors automatically unlock upon placing a finger, of course, only for pre-registered and stored biometric data, and let you in. Everything can, as hinted, be linked to a central automated control of the building, including classic windows and entrance doors. Individual elements can thus be controlled manually in the room, centrally via PC, or remotely using a mobile phone. The control panel works with weather indicators, CO2 sensors, and other pre-set indicators and values, and then automatically controls ventilation, shading elements, and heating. When leaving the house, it is possible to indicate all open and poorly closed doors and windows, which can automatically close based on the user's request by entering a simple command.
Safety and Security
Schüco aluminum sliding systems meet high safety requirements. A significant advantage is the very nature of the material, which is solid and stable. Depending on the variant of the sliding door system's equipment, resistance to burglary can be guaranteed up to resistance class 2 (BT2). Returning briefly to the introduced e-slide technology, its ingenuity is also confirmed by intelligent software with pinch protection, e.g. for fingers. This causes the wing to immediately retract upon detecting an obstacle (whether a person or an object). With optional infrared sensors, an obstacle can even be detected as it approaches the device.
SPECIFIC TIP - SCHÜCO ASS 77 PD.SI Sliding System
Among many system variants, let's take a closer look at the large-format sliding system Schüco ASS 77 PD.SI, which carries the GOLD 2012 trophy in the "buildings" category of the prestigious international competition iF product design award. The system also received the BEST OF THE BEST 2012 award within the reddot design award competition. What convinced the expert jury? The ASS 77 PD.SI allows for the realization of large sliding elements while maintaining narrow sightlines of the profiles and excellent thermal insulation values. The dual-rail frame profile is also perfectly integrated into the building structure, and where the wings meet, there is only a minimal sight width. In addition to excellent thermal insulation values of the window unit - Uw from 0.84 W/(m²K) - let's highlight the innovative automatic drives and locking technology. The track can handle a load of up to 500 kg, ensuring improved handling of the wing, which can be comfortably operated not only automatically (the system is equipped with Schüco TipTronic fittings) but now also manually (up to 250 kg). It is standard for barrier-free access, resistance to burglary up to class BT2, and the option to choose from various access control systems (e.g. fingerprint scanners). Soon, the Schüco ASS 77 PD.SI system will also offer a unique 90° corner solution with a minimal fixed corner post.
