Venture beyond borders to discover new themes and projects, create, improve, and meet other colleagues. With the Culture Moves Europe grant, this is now possible even in the fields of architecture and cultural heritage. Embark on a journey or invite foreign colleagues to join you.
The EU program Creative Europe for cultural and creative sectors launched an initiative called Culture Moves Europe in October last year to support the international mobility of artists, creators, and cultural workers in the fields of architecture, cultural heritage, design and fashion, literary translation, music, performing arts, and visual arts. This new European initiative brings an unprecedented amount of funding for the cultural scene and has ambitious goals – by 2025, with a budget of 21 million euros, it aims to enable approximately seven thousand residents of Europe to travel abroad for professional development and international cultural cooperation.
The experience of an international stay is inspiring and enriching for every creator, whether a beginner or someone with a long-standing presence in the cultural scene. It not only allows them to explore new countries, broaden their horizons, and educate themselves but also often leads to establishing valuable personal contacts that can evolve into unique international projects. A relatively small initial investment for one artist can thus become a simple tool for stimulating long-term collaboration among foreign scenes.
Culture Moves Europe provides two types of financial support. One is intended for individual applicants, who can use it to cover travel expenses to one of the Creative Europe countries (in addition to EU member states, also to Armenia, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Tunisia), as well as food, accommodation, etc. The duration of the stay abroad should not exceed 60 days. The other enables hosting organizations to arrange a residency for a group of artists or cultural professionals in their facilities. Costs for the hosting organization as well as transportation and meals for incoming participants are funded, lasting from 22 to 300 days.
The Culture Moves Europe initiative was preceded by the pilot program i-Portunus, which had very similar conditions, so the stories of its participants can inspire applicants for Culture Moves Europe. For example, Dana Račková, the director of the artistic group Performalita, obtained a grant for an international trip through i-Portunus. Dana used the funding for her traditional music group Milánosz, which focuses primarily on original Slavic multi-voiced songs. According to her, the grant was not difficult to obtain and the experience was very encouraging in the post-COVID period. Thanks to it, the band traveled to Germany and Croatia in 12 days, where, in addition to performing, they also conducted workshops and recorded a CD. The cultural center Sladovna Písek received a grant from i-Portunus to organize a residency during which they welcomed creators from Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia. They worked on joint projects, educated themselves, and deepened foreign professional relationships. The result was then a festival for adults and children.
Information about open calls for Culture Moves Europe is provided by the Creative Europe Office. You can also contact them for consultation requests. Applications for support for individual mobility can still be submitted until May 31, 2023, with another round of applications starting in the fall of this year. If you would like to obtain funding as a hosting organization to arrange a residency for foreign artists and workers, you can do so within the first call until June 15, 2023, or as part of one of the subsequent three calls that are expected to follow by the end of 2025.
