Semily – Today, the Liberec region opened a home for people with intellectual and combined disabilities in Semily. The construction of the house with four community households, which will offer dignified conditions for 16 clients, cost the region 99.2 million crowns. More than half of the funding was obtained from European funds. However, the transformation of the Tereza Social Care Services does not end here; work is ongoing on the repair and completion of other buildings in Benešov near Semily, said Anna Provazníková, the regional councilor for social affairs, to ČTK.

The new home in Semily includes a respite service for families of the disabled. "It is a place where they can place the client for a week, for 14 days, go on vacation, and know that they are in a safe environment and in a place where they are truly happy. There are two beds for these clients, studios with their own entrance, which ensures privacy and access to necessary services and staff," added Provazníková.

The home for the disabled in Semily is located among family houses in the Na Vinici area. While in other places in the region, residents resisted similar projects, there were no problems in Semily. "We provided the land for the construction to the region; from the beginning, it was a supported project because Domov Tereza is actually a little distance away in Benešov, so we have been living with these clients for many years, and there has never been a problem here. I would say that the locals rather supported it," said Semily's mayor Lena Mlejnková.

The director of the facility, Marie Vojtíšková, is pleased with the new home for the disabled. "Clients will be divided into four households, and there will be an improvement in the provision of services. They will be able to decide on their own lives, they will have enough privacy, security of individual approach, and the opportunity to stay outside in the garden; we have raised beds there," she added.

The Tereza Social Care Services in Benešov near Semily care for adults with combined, intellectual, or chronic mental illnesses. The completion of the new spaces in Semily will allow for the reconstruction of the original Art Nouveau building in Benešov, and another unsuitable house will be replaced by a new one. Until these works are completed, the Hotel Centrum in Semily, which the city modified for the disabled, serves as a weekly day center. Overall, the transformation of the Tereza facility will cost 214 million crowns.

The transformation of social services in the Liberec region began more than 20 years ago. The number of clients in institutions has decreased; some have returned to their families, while others live in supported apartments. The first transformed facility was the Domov Mařenice in the Česká Lípa area, and clients from homes in Jestřebí, Hodkovice nad Mohelkou, and Raspenava in the Liberec region now also live in a new home. New energy-efficient homes for the disabled have been built in Nová Ves near Chrastava, and according to Provazníková, the region is preparing to construct more.
