Prace (Brno Region) – After ten months, the chapel of the Memorial of the Mound of Peace near Prace in the Brno Region will open to visitors at the beginning of August. Experts have dehumidified the chapel and restored the plasterwork. Work continues at the memorial on the restoration of the main multimedia exhibition, which will not be completed until the turn of November and December, in time for commemorative events for the Battle of Austerlitz. This was stated by the curator of the memorial, Ondřej Buček.

"The chapel has been closed since October; it was necessary to carry out dehumidification, which had several phases. First, the space was dehumidified from the outside, then it was necessary to clean the surfaces of the stones and joints, and then the work moved inside. Five layers of restoration plaster were needed to reconstruct the original painting," Buček described.

Visitors to the memorial can currently only visit the outdoor areas and the café; the short-term exhibition "In the Shadow of the Austerlitz Sun" will reopen on July 13 and be accessible until the end of August.

"The main exhibition has been closed since June 23 for restoration; the entire interior is currently being stripped down. However, we have prepared a new tour route through the outdoor areas of the memorial for visitors. They will be guided through it by a guide who will explain the entire area, the monuments around it, views of the battlefield, and the course of the entire battle," added Buček.

The new multimedia exhibition will be more accessible to visitors. Previously, doors would automatically close behind visitors in each room, and after the projection ended, they would open and allow them into the next part of the exhibition. This will change after the reconstruction is completed, allowing people to move more freely between the individual rooms.

"The chronological order of the entire exhibition with a recommended pathway will still be maintained. However, the movement of visitors or the speed of their passage will not be restricted in any way. Additionally, four new interactive elements will be added to the exhibition," the curator added.

The Mound of Peace was created in honor of the victims of Napoleon's victorious battle at Austerlitz in 1805. It is the natural center of the Austerlitz battlefield conservation area. The memorial and museum are managed by the Museum of Brno.
