Liberec - The Liberec Region intends to commence construction of a new building for the secondary medical school in Liberec by the end of 2026. The construction of the new school, with a capacity of up to 750 students, is estimated to cost around 630 million crowns excluding VAT. The design by the Liberec studio of Petr Stolín won the architectural competition, and the region will now negotiate with him regarding the completion of the study and the preparation of the project documentation. It is expected to cost up to 43 million crowns without VAT, Deputy Governor Zbyněk Miklík (Pirates) told journalists today.
The competition was held in two rounds, with 27 applicants, six of whom advanced to the second round. The proposal from the Prague studio BY architects came in second, and the third place went to the Brno studio Fenomen Space. "The public will be able to view the winning designs from the second round from August 27 to August 30 in the lobby of the regional office and then at the FORUM shopping center in Liberec,” added Governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region).
The Liberec medical school has been seeking a new building for several years. "It is located in a historic house from 1812 opposite St. Anthony's Church in Sokolovské Square, which belongs to the City of Liberec. Our female students do not fit there, so they also study at other locations. The layout of the listed building does not allow for further development of the school. By building new facilities, we aim to meet the growing demand for healthcare personnel. It also urgently needs new, modernly equipped specialized classrooms,” the governor added.
The building, constructed to a so-called passive standard, will be erected in the school complex on Jablonecká Street near the Broumovská housing estate, where the secondary vocational school currently operates. The land there provides ample space for further construction. According to the governor, the project is divided into two phases. "The first phase is the school, including sports facilities connected to the existing area, and the second phase is a potential construction of a youth home,” he added. The region has also reached an agreement with ČEZ on the relocation of high-voltage power lines to provide enough space for the construction.
According to Půta, healthcare fields are a priority for the region; currently, investments are also being made to expand the medical school in Turnov, where a center for vocational education focused on healthcare and social services is being completed for over 50 million crowns. The construction has become complicated as the contractor, BREX, has gone into insolvency. However, Půta stated that the school year will start there on September 2, just like elsewhere; the floor with the new classrooms will be completely finished a few days later. "This will not affect the operation of the school,” the governor added.
