In St. Vitus Cathedral, the blessing of new organs will take place today

Prague – At the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, a blessing of the new organ will take place today at 5:00 PM. It will be part of a service during which Antonín Dvořák's Mass known as the Lužanská will be performed on the organ.

According to an earlier statement by the chairman of the Svatovítské Varhany Foundation, Vojtěch Mátl, the effort to build a new organ lasted 14 years. Thousands of donors contributed over 135 million crowns to the national collection for the new instrument designed by the Spanish master organ builder Gerhard Grenzing.

The ceremonial blessing of the organ will be followed by six concerts, culminating in a televised gala concert from the cathedral on June 21.

The public had the opportunity to assess the sound of the organ as an accompaniment during the funeral of Cardinal Dominik Duka in mid-November last year. According to leading Czech organist Jaroslav Tůma from the Faculty of Music and Dance at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, the new organ in St. Vitus Cathedral will be among the most magnificent cathedral instruments in the world.
