Barcelona – The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe today announced the list of 40 buildings that have advanced to the final selection for the 2024 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, known as the Mies van der Rohe Award.
Among the forty buildings, we also find a representative from the Czech Republic – The PLATO Ostrava City Gallery of Contemporary Art, designed by the Polish studio KWK Promes. Slovakia is represented in the shortlist by the Reconstruction and Extension of the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava by the studio Architekti B.K.P.Š. The buildings were selected by a seven-member jury consisting of Frédéric Druot, Martin Braathen, Pippo Ciorra, Tinatin Gurgenidze, Adriana Krnáčová, Sala Makumbundu, and Hrvoje Njiric.
The nominated works are located in 38 European cities, 33 regions, and 20 countries. In the areas of Berlin, Brussels, Catalonia, central Portugal, Flanders, Vienna, and Pannonian Croatia, there are 2 works each, while an additional 26 works are scattered across Europe.
The selection of 40 works includes 14 different programs, including collective housing, cultural and educational buildings, which constitute half of the selected works, as well as works in the fields of hospitality, public administration and civic buildings, healthcare, industry, infrastructure, landscaping, mixed-use, single-family housing, sports and leisure, temporary structures, and urban planning. All contribute to creating a high-quality living environment for all of us.
