On January 8, 2019, the sixteenth edition of the student competition Bohuslav Fuchs Award took place at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology, under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Ing. arch. Jan Kristka, Ph.D. The competition aims to determine the best student studio project and the best studio, and to objectively assess the level of the faculty. Semester projects were evaluated by a panel of six independent judges - a trio of renowned Czech architects and selected winners from the previous year’s competition among the students. This year, the judging panel included Dean of UMPRUM doc. Ing. akad. arch. Jan Šépka, Ing. arch. Martin Jan Rosa, and Ing. arch. Ada Rypl Žabičková. The student members were Oskar Madro, Jan Albert Peřina, and Bc. Miroslav Vochta. The jury met in the morning and then proceeded to the faculty's premises, where the students' works were displayed. First, the judges examined all the works. Then, they began to decide which works would advance to the next round. After several hours of contemplation and discussions about the individual projects, the panel determined the overall winners of this year’s competition. Three works made it among the winning projects. The first was a project titled “MARKET! GREENHOUSES! STATION!!! BORDERS” by authors Anna Kotlabová and Lucie Zádrapová from the 4th year. The second project was the work of a collective of students: Adriána Briestenská, Monika Briestenská, Adéla Hajšmanová, Marika Janíková, Magdaléna Juřicová, Klára Pešková titled “City for People – People for the City”. Both of these projects were created in the workshop Foretník – Ponešová. The third winning project was the work “Steel frame as a City” by students Lenka Lackovičová, Tatiana Uhríková, and Dominika Štefková. In the category of Awarded Project, the jury selected two works. The first was a publication mapping Brno's overlooked architectural monuments titled “Empty Urban Moments” by authors Jarmila Fučíková and Hana Slouková from the workshop Kopáčik. The second awarded work was a project from the Foretník – Ponešová workshop titled “Attribute of the City – Urban Structure,” authored by Klára Vaculíková, Daniel Menšík, Anna Červenková, Terezie Javůrková, Rebeka Vrbinčíková, and Karolína Kubičková. In the category of Best Studio, the jury appreciated the original approach and unconventional theme of the semester work of the Kristek-Sedlák studio. The Bohuslav Fuchs Award is organized annually by the student association SOFA (Student Community of the Faculty of Architecture, z.s). We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dean Ing. arch. Jan Kristka, PhD, and the sponsors not only for the beautiful prizes for the winners but also for their trust and cooperation. We greatly appreciate it. Partners: ERA 21, VUT, Faculty of Architecture, National Theatre Brno, Miracle Lemonade, TIC Brno, Legia, Kino Art, FabLab Brno, Theatre Husa na Provázku.
