On Thursday, November 10, 2011, the ARCH Award 2011 was ceremoniously presented in the premises of the Hall of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.

The ARCH Award is a prestigious award for architecture, granted since 1998 by the influential professional magazine ARCH on architecture and other cultures, which has been published by Eurostav, s.r.o. since 2006. The purpose of the award is to highlight noteworthy works from the domestic architectural scene and thus contribute to its further cultivation. The ARCH Award has a high professional credit, ensured by the participation of top European architects on the jury. Its specific feature is the rule that one cannot apply for it. Nominations for the ARCH Award are granted annually by the editorial board of the magazine, composed of prominent figures from the Slovak and Central European architectural scene.

The decision on the 2011 ARCH Award was made by an international jury consisting of: Andrea Bacová (editor-in-chief of the magazine ARCH, Slovakia), Andrej Hrausky (Slovenia), Ján Krcho (Slovakia), Tomáš Rusín (Czech Republic), and Marta Schreieck (Austria) from September 21 to 23, 2011. The jury assessed thirteen architectural works nominated for this year’s award by the magazine's editorial board. These were: Cassovar Business Center I. in Košice, Tulipán Elementary School in Nitra, Eurovea - river promenade in Bratislava, Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Berlin, Záhorská Residence in Bratislava-Záhorská Bystrica, House of Fracture in Kynceľová, Multifunctional Building Viktória in Bratislava, Avelane Clinic in Nitra, Reconstruction of the O. Nepela Ice Stadium in Bratislava, Low-Energy Residential Complex Minergo in Bratislava, Phoenix Zeppelin Headquarters in Banská Bystrica, and House PI on Domaša, Otio - house by the rectory in Nitra-Dražovciach.

Laureate of the ARCH Award 2011
PHOENIX ZEPPELIN HEADQUARTERS, BANSKÁ BYSTRICA
Architects: BRANISLAV HOVORKA, ŠTEFAN MORAVČÍK, MARTIN PAULÍNY

From the jury's evaluation:

It is architecture of the future, it contains an understanding of the place, an understanding of the role, and resulting logical and appropriate solutions, conscientiously processed, regardless of the height of the financial ceiling. (Marta Schreieck)

It is admirable that someone decided to approach the service and sale of construction machinery with such a degree of culture and created conditions for architects to realize an exceptionally complex work in a suburban location. Phoenix Zeppelin is a commendable precedent in this case. (Andrea Bacová)

In the case of Zeppelin, I see a moment of surprise in that we found architectural moments there that no one expected and no one thought it should be there in that situation. There is a huge positive in that... (Ján Krcho)

There was an admirable complexity in the architectural consideration. The architects addressed it from the flower pot outside all the way to the key in the cabinet. (Tomáš Rusín)
