Luxembourg – The BigMat Group, a distributor of building materials, announced the winners of the International BigMat Architecture Award 2013. The awards were presented during a ceremony on Friday, November 22, at the Parque de las Ciencias in Granada, Spain, in the presence of 15 finalists, members of the international jury, and representatives from companies forming the BigMat group.
A total of 868 works from five European countries made it to the shortlist: Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic. The international jury, led by president Jesús Aparicio and consisting of Marie Vanhamme (Belgium), Carlos Ferrater (Spain), Dominique Perrault (France), Cino Zucchi (Italy), Zdeněk Lukeš (Czech Republic), and secretary Jesús Donaire, decided to award the following projects:

BigMat National Spanish Prize 2013
Atrio Relais & Châteaux Hotel and Restaurant, Cáceres, authors: Mansilla + Tuñón

BigMat National Italian Prize 2013
Via Padovani Housing, Imola, authors: Lelli & Associati Architettura + Magazè S.R.L.

BigMat National Prize of the Czech Republic 2013
Memorial to the Victims of Communism, Liberec, authors: Petr Janda / Brainwork + Sporadical


From the 15 finalist projects, a project was selected to receive Special Award for Young Architects. This honor was awarded to the project of the Faculty of Cell Biology and Genetics, University of Alcalá, Alcalá de Henares, author: Héctor Fernández Elorza.

The jury also awarded Special Award for Cultural Heritage Restoration – to the project Atrio Relais & Châteaux Hotel and Restaurant, Cáceres, authors: Mansilla + Tuñón.

Additionally, 10 second places were awarded in BigMat 2013 to the following projects:
