On September 5, 2006, at 1:00 PM, after fourteen years of planning and constant negotiation, the construction of the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI) began in the south of the city, near the Schönefeld Airport (FBS) from 1946. As of November 1, 2011, BBI is expected to take over its functions and serve up to 25 million passengers annually (40 million in the second phase). The total construction costs will amount to 2 billion Euros. The main terminal will consist of a six-story hall that is 220 meters long, 180 meters wide, and 32 meters high. The contract for the airport's construction was awarded in 1999 without any competition to the architectural firm gmp (the authors of Berlin-Tegel Airport from the 1970s). Info>
