Brno - Brno city councilors are reconsidering whether the planned concert hall should be located next to the Besední dům in the center or in another location. The head of the coalition ODS councilor club, Libor Šťástka, stated this week that his party does not consider the location on Veselá Street, that is, next to the Besední dům, as a dogma. Brno Philharmonic has been calling for the construction of a hall for about 100 years. The hall, costing 1.2 billion crowns, lacks clear financing. According to Šťástka, a suitable location could perhaps be the space by Janáček Theatre on Roosevelt Street. "This would complete the theater street,” he said. On the opposite side, Mahen Theatre is adjacent to Janáček Theatre. The planned construction of the Janáček Cultural Center was one of the significant topics in Brno before last year’s municipal elections. Most parties supported the construction. Last autumn, South Moravian Governor Michal Hašek and Brno Mayor Roman Onderka (both ČSSD) sent a letter to three government members requesting co-financing. Both Brno and the region want 600 million crowns from the state, their share should amount to 200 and 100 million crowns respectively. The remaining 300 million crowns they seek from a private investor. The hall is also expected to function as a congress center. The project includes a main hall with a capacity of 1200 to 1600 seats and an underground parking lot for 372 cars. The center is also to include a rehearsal room for the Brno Philharmonic symphony orchestra and a recording studio with modern technologies for both commercial and non-commercial use. The Philharmonic currently performs in the Besední dům, which, however, is not suitable for such a large ensemble. Sometimes, Brno Philharmonic also plays at Janáček Theatre.
