Brno - The City Hall of the Brno-střed district will renovate the former Grocery House at Zelný trh for 40 million crowns, where a covered market will be created. Inside, dozens of food vendors will find their facilities, architect Michal Palaščák said today to ČTK. The reconstruction should start this year so that the market can open in the summer season of next year, added the deputy mayor of the district, Jiří Švachula (ANO).
The previous leadership of ODS and ČSSD also wanted to build a covered market in the building. The new coalition of Žít Brno, ANO, KDU-ČSL, and the Green Party has finalized the project. However, compared to the original plan, it has added more spaces for vendors and plans to return the building to its earlier form. "We will remove insensitive construction modifications from the nineties and give the building a concept from 1949," added Švachula. According to architect Palaščák, the interventions in the building in the nineties were not good. "It was a mutilation of the house, which harmed the spirit of the market. Therefore, we want to return to the original appearance as much as possible," stated Palaščák.
The City Hall will restore the entrance to the market from Starobrněnská Street and access from Zelný trh will be possible via escalators. "A new passage will be created connecting Zelný trh with the courtyard of the Old Town Hall. The actual covered market will ultimately be two stories. Visual permeability between the two floors will be ensured by an interior atrium," said City Hall spokesman Roman Burián.
In the underground spaces, there will be storage areas and public toilets, the ground floor will feature a healthy nutrition bistro with a children's corner and a café. In the two floors of the market, vendors will be able to offer fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meat, sausages, and farm products. "In the highest floor, we would also envision a café or another decent gastronomic establishment, but it will depend on the quality and creativity of the offers we receive in the standard bidding process," added Švachula. There is also a plan for a relaxation terrace combined with a roof garden on the modified rooftop.
According to Švachula, the market will be a benefit for Brno. "Every city similar to Brno has such a market. The advantage for vendors is that they can sell inside both in winter and summer, whereas they would have problems with some products outside due to the cold or heat," stated Švachula.
