Brno - A covered market will open in May at Zelný trh in Brno, which has been renovated for 50 million by the municipal district of Brno-střed. This was announced in a press release by the city hall spokesperson Denisa Kapitančiková. Initially, the market was supposed to be renovated for 45 million and open last year, but the reconstruction had to be halted due to serious structural issues. This caused delays in the opening and increased costs. Inside, dozens of vendors will find facilities. Their assortment will complement the offerings of outdoor stalls.

In the past, the city hall renovated the entire Zelný trh square, where vendors offer goods in stalls. "The composition of tenants and the assortment in the market will appropriately complement the fruits and vegetables that Brno residents are used to buying under umbrellas at Zelný trh. In the market, they will be able to buy foods that cannot be sold outdoors. Typically, these include meat, fish, dairy products, or eggs. Therefore, it will finally be possible to do a complete food shopping at Zelný trh,” said Deputy Mayor Jiří Švachula (ANO).

Inside, it will also be possible to eat at any time. "In the morning, breakfasts, coffee, and teas will be offered at the stalls and bistros, at noon it will be possible to have lunch there, and we plan to operate until the evening hours. The dishes will be prepared by chefs using ingredients that they buy fresh directly from farmers,” added Kapitančiková.

Small farmers will also have the opportunity to rent a sales spot for a day, a week, a month, or long-term. The entrance will be from three sides, namely from Zelný trh, from the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, and also via the stairs from Starobrněnská street. "On the ground floor, the jazz café Podobrazy will reopen, which operated from 2000 to 2013 in the Místodržitelský palace at Moravské náměstí,” reported Kapitančiková.

On the top floor, there will be a coworking center, a space for various workers functioning independently. In the evening, the space will transform into a bar. There will also be an observation terrace with a view of Zelný trh and the historical center of Brno.

The market building dates back to the late 1940s. It replaced the bombed bourgeois houses during the war. In the 1990s, the building was insensitively reconstructed according to architect Michal Palaščák, who is designing the current renovation. Therefore, his intention was to return it to its original form.
