Brno - The Brno-střed municipal district has suspended the reconstruction of the market building in Zelný trh. The reason is serious structural defects in the building, stated the deputy mayor of Brno-střed, Jiří Švachula (ANO), in a press release today. According to him, it is estimated that it will take about a month to resolve the situation. The municipal district is building a covered market for dozens of vendors in the former grocery store for 46 million crowns.
The structural defects were uncovered after the demolition work was completed. "These deficiencies arose during previous insensitive partial reconstructions in the 1990s," informed Švachula. The construction of the market was supposed to be finished by the end of this year, but the deadline has now been pushed back by about a month.
The goal of the entire project is to reconstruct the covered market as an integral part of Zelný trh square, where vendors offer fruits, vegetables, and other products in an open space. On the ground floor, there should be a jazz café and a local bakery with a bistro, where it will be possible to purchase freshly baked goods made on site. It will also include a supervised children's center.
The first and second floors will have space for vendors selling fresh food such as fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat, and cold cuts. The first floor will focus on fruits and vegetables, while the second floor will offer delicacies and gourmet products such as wine, fish, foreign cheeses, and more.
Currently, the entire Zelný trh square is functioning as a market. Vendors have over 100 designated outdoor spots. In the covered market, it will be possible to sell on the square both in the summer and in the winter.
