Brno - Brno will invest 75 million crowns to reconstruct Dominikánské náměstí, which currently serves as a parking lot for dozens of cars. Instead, a public space will be created there. Work could begin next year, said the mayor's deputy Richard Mrázek (ANO) to reporters today.
The council has announced a tender for the reconstruction of the square. According to Mrázek, the evaluation criteria include price, but also the shortening of the construction time. "It is necessary to carry out the long-planned complete reconstruction of the engineering networks and the entire area of the square. The networks under the square will be relocated to a collector for easier access," added Mrázek.
The work is expected to start next year and finish in 2019. The large parking lot will thus disappear from the square. "Cars are not counted on Dominikánské náměstí. We are addressing what to do with the residents. The city district Brno-střed has proposed that they can park in the zones where parking meters are currently located with a card," added the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).
The square will be transformed into a public space. It has already been enlivened by the Tourist Information Center of the city of Brno, which will be hosting Christmas markets there for a month starting on Friday, just like in the nearby Náměstí Svobody. Dominikánské náměstí will become a gourmet paradise, with food stalls and tables for visitors. Similarly, Dominikánské náměstí served gourmets during the Christmas markets last year.
According to Mrázek, the reconstruction plan also takes into account the reconstruction of the Jalta Palace, which the city sold to a private investor for over 100 million. This could create space for a shopping arcade, offices, or apartments.
