Chomutov - The Chomutov Town Hall has suspended the plan for the demolition of the city's baths. The city wants the residents and architects to express their opinions on the future of the deserted building. This was stated today by the spokesperson of the city hall, Šářka Schönová.

In the past, the city offered the complex for lease. No one wanted the building, which is demanding to operate and expensive in terms of energy consumption, not even for a symbolic crown per year. A decision had already been made about the demolition. The new leadership wants to examine all the possibilities that could contribute to the revitalization of the building, according to the spokesperson.
A workshop will take place in Chomutov on May 28 at 3:00 PM. "The goal is to gather as many suggestions and ideas from the city's citizens for the use of the building," Schönová stated. The event will be opened by a presentation from architect and publicist Adam Gebrian, and other experts will also join.
The PRO Chomutov movement, which currently leads the coalition in the town hall, criticized the demolition in the past while in opposition. "Chomutov has more than enough destroyed buildings in its history, unfortunately even in the recent past. We want to give the municipal baths another chance and we would be very pleased if citizens could help us find a solution that would allow for a meaningful, original, and economically rational use of the building," said Mayor Daniel Černý (PRO Chomutov).
The municipal baths in the center of Chomutov were one of the most modern sports facilities in northern Bohemia in the 1980s. They served for school training, competitive and recreational swimmers for over 30 years. In 2012, they were replaced by a water park in the Zadní Vinohrady district.
The Vrbenské baths in Ústí nad Labem face a similar fate as those in Chomutov. The modern swimming pool was built in 1931 for its employees in the Střekov district by factory owner Georg Schicht. The baths served the public and competitive swimmers for 60 years. However, after a failed privatization, they were never reopened and have been deteriorating since the 1990s.
