Karviná - A modernized City Stadium will open in Karviná next Saturday. The reconstruction works and new facilities cost the city 42 million crowns, and the region contributed an additional 13 million crowns, said the spokesperson for the city hall, Šárka Swiderová, to ČTK.
The old football field, which is mainly used for training today, is larger and better lit and has a new surface. The stadium also has new facilities for players and other personnel, including restroom facilities, parking, and locker rooms. The new stand is roofed, and there are also new spaces for guests and the press.
The city council has also approved further stages of modernization for the sports complex, but currently only has a study for it. "Plans are underway for the construction of additional stands for spectators, new tennis courts and facilities for tennis players, modernization of the volleyball court, the construction of a parking lot, and revitalization of the park near the stadium," Swiderová specified. She added that in the future, the city wants to relocate the athletic track and facilities for athletes elsewhere. Discussions are currently taking place with Silesian University about a possible move. "Negotiations with the university regarding the use of its spaces are still in the early stages, so athletics will remain at the stadium for now," Swiderová added.
The stadium was built at the turn of the 60s and 70s, completed in 1972 and has not been significantly modernized since. Some facilities were already in nearly a state of disrepair.
