Klášterec nad Ohří - The Evženie Spa Area in Klášterec nad Ohří in the Chomutov region is awaiting renovation in the coming years. The aim of the joint project between the city and the Priessnitz Healing Spa in Jeseníky is to elevate local spa services and focus them on medical rehabilitation care. An architectural study is being prepared for the new spa building, which will create up to 200 beds, Mayor Štefan Drozd (Party of Independent Entrepreneurs of the Czech Republic) told reporters today.

The city has approached three architectural firms, which are to create a feasibility study by the end of summer. They are to propose the development of the spa and the appearance of the spa buildings. The plans include accommodation and catering capacities as well as new spa treatments. The project will also include the construction of a parking lot with 100 spaces.

According to the mayor, construction work could begin as early as spring 2024. The exact costs will only be evident once the project is completed. However, the city leadership is counting on a price exceeding 200 million crowns.

The municipality has been striving for the development of spa services for several years. The beginnings of spa services in the city date back to the 19th century, when the first healing spring, Evženie, was discovered. According to the mayor, the current spa area hardly operates as a spa. The area, which currently has 40 beds, primarily offers wellness and some spa services in short-term stays.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health has set a condition for the city that it must start operating spa medical rehabilitation care, or it risks losing its certification for using the springs, threatening the spa tradition in the city. Therefore, last year, the city joined forces with the Priessnitz Spa in Jeseník and together they are working towards the development of local spa services.

The spa treatments will specialize mainly in the musculoskeletal system. "Today, it is preferred not to have patients after hip, shoulder, knee surgeries in hospitals, but to provide this follow-up care precisely in these facilities. This means focusing not only on the internal digestive system, some drinking regimens, but precisely also on the musculoskeletal system," said Drozd.

The leadership of the fourteen-thousand-strong city hopes that the development of spa services will also support tourism. New spa treatments could attract tourists for longer stays, which should stimulate local entrepreneurs. Thus, new restaurants, cafes, or other services could emerge in the city.
