Klášterec nad Ohří (Chomutov Region) - In Klášterec nad Ohří, an investment has been completed that significantly changed the appearance of the town. The construction of a spa zone and the renovation of the historic center cost 140 million crowns, of which 118 million was obtained by the town hall from EU grants and the Ministry for Regional Development. The goal is to obtain the status of a spa town, Klášterec mayor Jan Houška told journalists today.

The spa zone development project included the construction of utility networks, a spa park with paths and a colonnade, access roads, a spa house with 15 beds, a mineral water bottling plant, and parking areas. In the square, companies replaced the surface of the road and sidewalks, the parking system was changed, and a renovated fountain and a new statue of Europa by local artist Karel Meloun will be added.
"We managed to expand the original project of 110 million crowns to include the reconstruction of access roads on Chomutovská Street towards the castle, new street lighting, and a parking lot with a recreation area in the square," Houška stated.
According to him, Klášterec wants to become a modern European spa town with a top-notch relaxation area. "We want people to come to us for vacation. In addition to professional healthcare and treatments, we will offer opportunities for sports activities, tourism in the surrounding area including a network of bicycle paths, and plans are also underway to improve the ski resort in nearby Měděnec," the mayor added.
The town lacks accommodation capacity; the town hall plans to build four more spa houses with up to 300 beds. "By establishing the spa zone and adjusting the historic center, we have laid the groundwork for further development activities. We would welcome a strategic investor. If none can be found, we would probably go into it ourselves," Houška added.
The town had previously applied for the allocation of spa status and is currently waiting for a decision from the state authorities. For the first phase of the spa center construction, it has already drawn 18 million crowns from EU funds in previous years.
