Building before conversion
Hradec Králové - The City Library in Hradec Králové is moving hundreds of thousands of books to a new location, which has been created in the former Vertex factory for approximately 200 million Czech crowns. The library is expected to welcome its first visitors in mid-March. This was informed by its spokesperson Vladimíra Svobodová today.

"The books being brought by the moving company are being placed on shelves and prepared so that our book collection is ready for the opening. In the new building, the vast majority of the books will be directly accessible to the public," said Svobodová. The books are being moved to the new facility from warehouses near Nechanice and from the central lending office on Tomkova Street, which was closed in December. People in Hradec Králové can currently borrow books at other branches of the library.
The relocation of the books should be completed by the end of February. "In March, we would move the staff, connect the computer networks, and around the middle of the month welcome the first visitors," said Svobodová. According to her, a café and exhibition spaces should also open in the new building by mid-March.
The library was originally supposed to start operating last September, but the delay, according to earlier statements from the city hall, was caused by the repeated selection procedure for the interior contractor, the completion of documentation, and changes in the fire assessment of the building. The city secured approximately 137 million crowns for the construction of the library from European grants.
The new library, designed by architect and actor David Vávra, will offer better facilities for both the public and staff. The building will, for example, have a children's section with a playroom, a café, and spaces for an audio library for the visually impaired. More information about the library and the project can be found at www.knihovnahk.cz.
The regional Study and Scientific Library has been operating in Hradec Králové since 2008. The construction of the modern building shaped like the letter X took four years and cost 405 million crowns. In addition to library services, it offers a conference hall with a capacity of 100 seats, a literary café, and gallery spaces.
