After nearly two years of collaboration among citizens, the city, and designers, the period of discussions and seeking "ideal" variants for various groups of residents and future users of the new square in Dobříš has concluded. In February 2009, the documentation for the purposes of the building permit was completed, and the city also received the approvals from all relevant authorities.
The purpose of the regeneration of the square in Dobříš is to achieve a clear urban space with all balanced functional components (transport, commerce, rest, and social functions). One of the means to emphasize the spatial connections of the square with other parts of the city, define its boundaries, and separate pedestrian areas from busy thoroughfares is the variability of the proposed surfaces. An artistic principle is applied, where only the main communication routes are designed with a concrete surface to visually and vertically separate them from the areas designated for traffic calmness. Other areas are designed with stone pavements of various formats and materials, supporting the hierarchy of additional functional parts of the paved surfaces and edges. The individual sides of the square are connected through paved pedestrian crossings across the main thoroughfares to ensure the paved sides of the square are as interconnected as possible. The solution for the paving will unify the square and support the integration of all parts of the center of Dobříš into one urban unit (structurally significantly damaged in the 2nd half of the 20th century). The design of the ground floor was preceded by the conceptual adjustment of the traffic system servicing the city center with the goal of preferring urban transport and eliminating excessive transit. The resulting solution offers a flexible public urban space intended for the free use of the residents and visitors of Dobříš – the area of the Square.

Project work from the perspective of the City of Dobříš
In collaboration with the FAM architects team, a quality project was created that was developed from the beginning based on discussions and comments from citizens while also meeting the demands of all other users of the square space. Among the most significant issues in designing the traffic solution were the necessity to maintain the through traffic of the class II road (Pražská), to address the extensive network of bus lines and the related movement of people, while significantly increasing the safety of children who walk across the square and the class II road to their schools. Efforts were also made to create a pleasant environment in the city center and to maximize the separation of the road with suitable greenery. Together with leading transport designers, the Příbram Transport Inspectorate, SUS Benešov, and the Dobříš Transport Department, we sought a solution that would meet the needs of the city's citizens, visitors, and passing traffic. During the year-long marathon of design, there were several changes to the surfaces of the routes, traffic signage, or calming elements. The most significant conflicts and differing demands emerged, likely, between supporters of greenery and parking spaces. The greenery proposal was often commented on at meetings by the Dobříš Beautification Society and other citizens; therefore, the city agreed to the proposal for a meeting between independent expert Dr. Cílek and the green designer Ing. Vízková. At the meeting, a mutual agreement was reached regarding the concept of the greenery design; Dr. Cílek supported Ing. Vízková's idea and added several of his recommendations and suggestions. An interesting topic was the "fight" for the alley. This dominant feature of the city will remain in Dobříš even after the reconstruction. The alley has been rejuvenated every 20 years until now, so it does not consist of any aged or historical trees. The dendrological survey showed that improper care for the trees in the city has condemned these young acacias to gradual extinction before they reached the aforementioned 20 years. For this reason, the city ultimately allowed the designers to replace the current trees with younger, more suitable species and committed itself to finding a better way to care for the greenery. Furthermore, the project managed to add a new row of deciduous trees along the northern edge of the square and supplement additional deciduous trees in the main square area. In contrast, the square will lose most shrubs or semi-shrubs and conifers of all types. The area of the main square will no longer have trampled lawn areas; these will be replaced by cultivated beds around the trees allowing for the planting of flowers or other plants. A frequent topic of discussions among the public and entrepreneurs was parking. Currently, there are more than 100 parking spaces in the area being addressed; the proposal accounts for a reduction in this number by 10. The city committed to build a new parking lot with a capacity of 50 spaces in the area of the farm located 200 m from the square, thus within walking distance. We are also trying to convince the Central Bohemian Regional Office of the importance of reconstructing the current disorderly space of the square, which must also be interested in the reconstruction due to the class II road. We have been negotiating with regional representatives for almost a year; however, negotiations have been delayed due to last year's regional elections. At the beginning of February 2009, an agreement was reached between the deputy governors for transport and for investments, who wish to support the city and jointly apply for a building permit for this project.
