Litomyšl (Svitavsko) - A new modern church of the Brethren Church in Litomyšl is expected to be opened at the end of November. Most of the necessary funds for its construction have already been gathered, said pastor Daniel Smetana to ČTK. The church will serve not only for worship but also for other purposes.
The building has been under construction since the end of 2008 according to the design of architect Zdeněk Franěk, in the spirit of functionalism, next to the thoroughfare through the town towards Svitavy. The project includes a hall for about 150 people, two multifunctional club rooms, and a social vestibule with facilities. On the second floor, there will be an apartment for the pastor of the congregation and his family. The unusual appearance of the church is mainly given by the alternately sloping shed roofs, which resemble a ramp.
"God willing, we will open with a ceremonial service at the end of November," Smetana stated.
The costs of construction will reach about 20 million crowns, with approximately 1.5 million crowns still missing. The plot was provided by the town hall in Litomyšl. In addition to donations from local members, other congregations, and the church construction fund, the church has also obtained funding from state subsidies, collections, and charity events, from the sale of the old prayer house in Litomyšl, from the Wader Foundation in Germany, sponsors, the Pardubice Region, and the town. The cross that will be placed on the top of the roof, as well as other artistic decorations, will come from donors.
"I am glad that we have agreed with the town hall that twice a week the space will serve as a farewell hall. This has been missing in Litomyšl so far," said Smetana.
The church should also be used for lectures, exhibitions, educational events, and theater.
